Our Mission...Should you care to accept it.
Remember the old T.V. series, “Mission Impossible?” Always there was some impossible–seeming task requiring a mask that would ultimately be “peeled” from the actor’s face, and an overarching convoluted plot of a capture or escape in the world of espionage. Each episode had both facets: a mission of great importance yet the goal looked impossible. Success appeared quite remote.
This past Sunday evening and Wednesday evening we heard two mission reports, the work in Africa of the International Sunset School of Preaching and Eastern European Missions in Russia and the Ukraine. What we heard was really OUR MISSION. And to remind us we must ask again; what is our Mission? “Go into all the world and preach the gospel.” Jesus said that. He gave me that mission.
I have often read it with the feeling that this is an impossible task. Or I rationalize to myself, “Yes, I know Paul and others went into the whole world, but they had less than 600 million people to reach. We have over six billion!” To those who have gone to Eastern Europe, South Africa, Ethiopia, Honduras, and Haiti I to spread the word and “give a cup of cold water in the name of Christ” have done as Jesus commanded. They “looked upon the fields white unto harvest” and what is even greater, the Lord has given a great harvest. We share in that great work by our financial support. No small measure of these successes has been this ingredient; they converted people who in turn began to do the work of “going to teach others.”
That is the way Paul and the first century church did it. That is the way we will do it here in Hendersonville and abroad. That is how we will carry out Our Mission...should we care to accept it.
