SO TRUE
I recently received an e-mail with the title “So True”. It was from a soldier in Iraq and what he was asking was why does the American public idolize some entertainers and sports figures to the point of losing their minds with grief when they die. Of course we have just seen this with the death of Michael Jackson and in the past when Elvis Pressley died. These were great entertainers and their deaths affect a great number of people, but they lived a luxurious life style, made millions, spent millions and were very flawed individuals. He wondered why they were idolized to such a great degree when all they did was entertain us. They were honored with great memorials and millions went to great lengths to honor them.
What he didn’t understand was all this adulation for one individual who only entertained us. He asked why isn’t this same kind of honor given to the soldiers who give their lives for their country. These men and women who serve our nation may never be wealthy or famous, but without them we could not have the great freedom we have and these gifted entertainers would not be able to perform.
One point that came to me from his writing was that we seem to go out of our way to honor and adore someone who was a very talented but flawed individual, but won’t take the time to remember and honor someone who had no flaws, and died so that we could not only have freedom but also eternal salvation.
In this nation that has been so blessed by God, why can’t we give the honor and glory to him and his son that we often bestow upon individuals who often give the wrong message especially to our youth? May God continue to bless us and help us get our priorities right.
