The Big Church
I found an article in an old Gospel Advocate about “The Big Church” by Wyatt Sawyer. He says God thinks and talks BIG. He talks about the whole world. Today that would be over six billion people. And when He talked about His love for mankind it was BIG. He gave His Son which was the biggest gift He could give.
When the Lord talked in the Bible about the church He talked BIG. He talked about “ALL NATIONS…” flowing into it and salvation for ALL men. When men listen to God, BIG things happen! The Lord talks big about the church. He started it with 3,000 souls. How many churches of Christ do we know today that number even half this number? We’ve had over 2,000 years to work on it. We need to think bigger, plan bigger, and build bigger.
How many of us are little thinkers today? We think about growing to 400, why not 1000. There are denominational churches numbering in the thousands. Why can’t we think in those terms? After all, we believe we have the truth, why are we not using it to grow?
The big church is the one with big people, who have big hearts, and brains, and eyes. They rid themselves of past traditions, prejudices, and faulty concepts to make room for bigness. A lot of people are sick of error, ignorance, and uncertainty. They want mercy, forgiveness, truth, love, peace of mind and hope for the future. THE LORD’S CHURCH is the pillar and ground of these.
The whole world is changing in so many ways--Faith, Truth and Morals never change! However, methods, approaches, techniques, and procedures do change. People once came to church in buggies. Now they drive to services in beautiful automobiles. The church that doesn’t grow is the one which retains horse and buggy methods in the rocket age. The world goes off and leaves it.
This article hit me because I often think small. I need to learn how God thinks and get my life in tune with him. Maybe some of you have the same problem.
