Why go to Church?

A few years ago we received an email. It was entitled “Why go to church?” Someone had written a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. He wrote that he had gone to church for 30 years now and had heard a lot of sermons but couldn’t remember a single one. He decided that he was wasting his time and maybe the preachers were wasting their time too.

This letter caused a real controversy and many other letters were written to the newspaper. It went on for weeks until someone wrote the clincher. It read, “I’ve been married for 30 years now and my wife has cooked
some 32,000 meals, but for the life of me I can’t recall the entire menu for a single one of these meals. I do know, however, that all of these meals nourished me. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment I would be spiritually dead today!”

When we are tempted not to attend church services, we need to think of the spiritual nourishment and blessings that we might be missing. Sometimes it boils down to our attitude and what we put into the service as to what we leave with. God bless us all as we make our personal decisions.
