Senn's Penn He Came Much is made of giving and receiving in this season. The spirit of generosity rises and excitement is at a high pitch. Giving makes us feel good inside. Presumably the freshness of these oft neglected motives is based on what God did for us by sending Christ Jesus as a tiny babe. I hope it's true that we're motivated by divine love. But, commercialism more often creates greed and covetousness than genuine love. Yes, we may resist such impulses, but only by reflecting more deeply into our real motivations at all seasons. This may be why God didn't order an annual event for us to remember Jesus' birth. It is His perfect human life, willing sacrificial death, and present intercession that makes his coming so precious. It is the whole, not merely a part of the story that matters. The birth initiated God's intervention to save us from our sins. And, this gift will move us to generosity, based on His goodness. But, too many rejoice when the season is over, so they can go back to being their old selfish selves. I don't think God has this in mind, do you? He came to bring peace to our hearts, and to transform our lives.
